Objective of the Course
The Postgraduate Diploma Course in Counselling Psychology (PGDAP) primarily called as Master Diploma in Medical Psychology (MDMP) is the first course in Tamil Nadu that provides knowledge in applied medical psychology. It focuses predominantly on psychological problems, faced by the medically ill patients and also by their family members and it also focuses the problems faced by the mentally ill patients. Like many other fields within the healthcare profession, psychology has splintered into many different areas of speciality. This course was created to fulfill the growing needs of the medically ill patient’s access to psychological service. This allows patients to see a professional practicing in a specific niche and as well as allows a professional with a psychological career to focus on an area of interest.

This course fulfills the interest of the people who aspires by psychology and needs to help the patients. A career in this course is an excellent means to find fulfillment and satisfaction. In the busy & growing medical specialities, it is difficult for a physician to find time to cater to the psychological problems of their patients and the graduates of this course would be immensely helpful to all the medical specialities.

To empower the students in technical knowledge, skills for assessment of psychological & psychiatry problems and effective counselling and behaviour therapy in patients having mental illness and psychological problems associated with medical illness. This course provides the required skills, competency to assess, intervene psychological & social factors that may predispose & maintain an individual with physical illness and methods of mitigating the negative effects of stressful situation, events & buffering personal resources.

Being a different field that includes both medical and psychological aspects provides an opportunity for the students/learners to work in the field of psychology and medical psychology. The graduate of this course will be able to help in assisting the psychiatrist, physician of various other medical speciality by conducting the interview, assessment, psychological test, diagnosis and psychological treatment. 2. B.Sc. / M.Sc. or B.A / M.A. Psychology (Practitioners or Delegates)
3. Bachelor / Master in Social work (Practitioners or Delegates)
4. Bachelor / Master in Occupational Therapy (Practitioners or Delegates)
5. Diploma / Bachelor / Master in Nursing (Practitioners or Delegates)
